Unusual Rescue

Postby rolandslf on Fri Apr 30, 2010 11:16 am

So I got called out to a construction site on the Estate by an African Male stating that there is a funny animal there.
On arrival I find this Tortoise, which I think is a female.
How she got there I cannot even guess.

Hello Henco

I think I know even less than you about Tortoises but I think it is a Leopard.

Nice one boet. Do you think it could be an escapee?

I definitely think that it escaped from someone. Even after enquiring from staff members who have worked on the Estate for the last 8 years,
none of them can recall a tortoise being seen on the Estate.

Thats definitely not a leopard but a hinged tortoise probably Natal, they are found in northern KZN and was most probably someones pet. Roland make sure you give it to someone who has a permit or even report it to Natcon as you don't want to be caught with one of these. I actually saw an advert for one on gumtree that was from Mount Edgecombe probably the same persons tortoise, needless to say I gave them a word of warning about not having a permit and that they were selling it with the permit. After that the advert was removed by them haha

So, the plot thickens. After your warning it looks like they must have just released it.
My problem is what to do with it, where can I safely release it, or should I just for instance take it to Mitchell Park.
Maybe I should take it to C.R.O.W.

What are my chances of obtaining a permit?

Getting a permit is probably going to be very slim but you could try, you never know?

Sorry Tyrone, I only accessed the net at work this morning.
I already dropped her off at C.R.O.W. on Saturday afternoon.

They definitely do not kill the animal. You must be thinking of SPCA, who have to euthanase after a period of time due to financial as well as accommodation factors.
