I came across this little guy traversing the small holding where we live. He's about the size of a man's hand, so probably still pretty young.
By my limited knowledge, it looks like a Marsh Terrapin (Pelomedusa subrufa). Can anyone with more knowledge confirm this?
I checked under the shell, and there is no hinge on the plastron, and as far as I know, the Marsh Terrapin is the only terrapin in our range that does not have a hinged plastron. (open to correction here.)
I will have to go scouting to see if there is a marshy area or body of water nearby where he might have come from. Could be more of them, and snakes..... could be a good herping spot!
