tortoise identification

I found this tortoise yesterday afternoon, trying to cross the road and i was worried it was going to the run over. So i stopped and picked it up.
I am not sure what type it is and what to do with it.
any help with be appreciated

Hi Patrick

That is in fact not a tortoise, but a terrapin, most likely a Marsh Terrapin.

Best to release it in a wet, swampy area nearby and let it be.

They often venture onto the road due to pool forming nest to the road from run-off.

what can i feed it on?
would it be cruel to keep it as a pet ???
as we really look after our animals well.

It is illegal to keep it, sadly. Best will be to let it go back where it came from.

All tortoises/terrapins/turtles are illegal without a permit.

Apparently they are all illegally imported.
