Home for Sliders

A friend of mine is looking for a good home for two female red-eared sliders. They are kept indoors in a 6ft aquarium but ideally should be in a heated pond. Enquiries from experienced keepers only please.

Please be aware that possession of these animals in Gauteng is an offense. They are also blacklisted on the proposed National alien and invasive species list.

Re: Home for Sliders

I purchased 2 Yellow Belly Sliders about 3 months ago. (obviously not knowing that they are illegal, which I only found out recently!) They are really awesome little creatures. Now that they are a bit bigger, I am pretty sure they are both males, so no breeding can be done with them...luckely.

No knowing that they are illegal I am not so keen on keeping them anymore.

Can anybody please give me some advise/ideas on what to do. I am not going to just let them free in some river etc, I am not stupid, so no need to worry about that.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Otherwise, what would be the best way to send them to Terrapin Heaven...if it had to come down to that?

I am based in Durban.

Contact your local Nature Conservation authorities and there is a small chance that they might give you a permit to keep them. If not they could also arrange that they go to a zoo or institution.

Rather dont send them to Terrapin heaven just yet. Lets first try all the avenues available.

Thanks for the quick reply BV.

Would they not fine me if I had to contact the authorities, knowing that I am in possesion of the "illegal Sliders"?

I would be happy to go that ruite, but am not keen on getting fined or any other troubles.

But I will definately do some looking into that.

Thanks

The authorities cannot fine you if you approach them at this stage. The law has not been implimented yet in KZN.

Is there a list of these banned animals we can access?

@ Ales...sorry for taking so long to upload some pics, but here they are.

I still haven't contacted the Athorities, but I'll look into it this weekend.
