EASTERN BOX TURTLES

Postby yagyujubei » Sat Apr 23, 2011 5:19 pm

Since I guess our seasons are reversed, spring is just beginning here. These are Eastern Box Turtles. They kinda remind me of a cross between water turtles and tortoises.
This was taken last Oct, right before hibernation.

I did get some infertile eggs last year. I have two males now, so I am expecting, actually hoping for, lots of eggs this season. I will update this when I find a nest. They incubate in about 2 months.

Very pretty animals. Do they swim much?

They live on land, but are excellent swimmers, and like a wet habitat. In their enclosure, I have three water pans about 4" deep, and they'll soak sometimes for days. They're very personable. Varied diet, worms, slugs, small frogs, berries, tomatoes.

I ended up with 11 hatchlings last year. So far this year, I have 4, and 8 in the incubator. This is my new male. He's pretty exceptional.

Beautiful male you have there
