So my gardener listened and called me once he found a new snake in the garage. I proceeded to catch it, noticing first that it seemed clearly not a mamba nor boomslang. After a little while I succeeded, and placed it in a 1m tall plastic container. It could easily climb up the walls, so i covered it in plastic with a hole in it, from where i took the first pictures.
I looked it up, and I swear, having four snake books, none can indicate conclusively which specimen it is. Simple information like the colour of the tongue is only mentioned for some species. On the face of it, it looks like the cover of Struiks Complete Guide to the Snakes of Southern Africa minus some spotting:
The bad part is that, according to the cover info, this is a Natal green snake, presumably only living in the wider Natal area, and certainly not in Nairobi?
Other similar species are Spotted Bush Snake, though specimen is not spotted, nor inflates its neck, and Green Water Snake. It had a bright blue tongue with black tip, black skin beneath the scales, and a very thin neck. It also had some almost fluorescent skin stripes on mid-body, clearly seen on the first two photos.
Does anyone have an idea of who we are talking about here?
Also, should someone have a nice snake book they would recommend for field identification, let me know.
I have, apart from the above Struik book, the Field Guide to the Snakes and Other Reptiles of Southern Africa and Photographic Guide to Snakes Other Reptiles and Amphibians of East Africa
Thanks again
