Ultramel Okeetee Project ... well worth the wait!

Postby Chantel » Tue Jan 20, 2015 2:16 pm

I've been working with this project for the last few years, and I couldn't be happier with this year's babies. They are exactly what I was working towards, and I'm thrilled with the final outcome :D Even the Reverse Okeetees from this clutch of exceptional (in my opinion ;) )

Awesome hatchlings!

Chantel, do you breed plain Ultras or just Ultramels?

If if you do, would it be possible to post a picture of an Ultra next to an Amel. I often struggle to tell the difference.

Yes, I do also hatch out Ultras, but it's actually not so easy to see which one's are Ultras and which ones are Ultramels. With ultramels, It was always assumed that the darker ones were ULTRAS and the lighter one's Ultramels, but that theory has since been proven wrong. For instance, some the ultramels in this clutch are quite dark but they can only be Ultramels as the pairing was Ultramel to Amel. Ultra's can only come out of Ultramel to Ultramel pairing, and so far I don't see any differences to indicate which ones are Ultras and which ones Ultramels.

It is actually easier to determine Ultra Caramels from Golddusts (Ultramel Caramel). The Ultra Caramels are quite different to the golddusts.

Westley, sorry I didn't answer your question properly. The eys of Ultramels and Ultra's are much darker than amels. You will see all the amels in the pics above have bright red eyes, whereas the ultramels have dark eyes.

Ahh yes, now I can see the difference in the eyes.

Off topic, but have you ever hatched some paradox animals, and if so, what morphs? I have seen pictures of some paradox Snows which are out of this world! Pity it's not inheritable.

Sadly I've never hatched any paradox animals.

The closest I ever got to "paradox"in corns was a few years ago from one of my Caramel clutches. One hatchling was Amber on one side, and caramel on the other side (both parents were het for hypo).

Wow, although not the most contrasting paradox, I would say an animals which is half Caramel, half Amber would still qualify as paradox.

I have read various idea on how a paradox animal comes to be, but the most accepted theory is that they are in fact chimeras; two fertilized eggs which have somehow (possibly due to trauma or other hereditary factors) merged into a single animal.

Weird stuff.

It is wierd, and totally fascinating. As you say, it would be nice if it was a heritable trait :)
