Information on RTB

Postby gekosin » Mon Mar 04, 2013 10:43 am

Morning all

So a colleague of my GF's might need to sell her RTB I just want to find out a few things as i have no experience with them.

She says its a 5 years old a female and 2 meters, is this normal? Everything I have read says females are alot larger than this?

What size enclosure will i require?

I will need to speak to the person but can these snakes be aggressive?

Do they need a taller or longer tank?

Thanks will post some more info on the snake once I have more :)

Remember every snake is special and thus not the same size. It is small-ish for an adult female but nothing outrageous. She could have been fed too little and thus causing the small size.

I would advise atleast a 1.4x0.5m tank. It does not need to be very high. Although red tail boas are known to climb and be semi arborial in the wild it is rare in adults due to their size and bulk. Also to put a big enough branch or something for it to climb you would almost need a room sized enclosure which is not practical.

They are known for not being aggresive especially if they are often handeled from neonates. But there is always the exception. I have a male that is a sweetheart if you handle him daily or every second day. But if you leave him for a week he strikes at everything that moves!!!

Hope I helped :)

I reckon about R500-800. Depends on personal choice. Just remember that they are one of the most common kept snakes in the trade. 2nd or 3rd most if I am correct.

I don't agree with you Reynard. I feel your valuation is too low.

For a 2m Sub-adult (possibly adult if the age is right) I think R1200-R1500 is more realistic.

But as you say, it all depends on the buyer and seller.

Hi there! Know its quite late ;) . I recently sold 2 males. One was 1.3m aprox and the other was 1.5. Lutvo (Mr.Venom) took the smaller one. I got R500 for him and could only get R800 for the bigger one with an enclosure. It was an urgent sale but it did take me quite a while to get them sold.

Hardest thing I've done! Burst into tears when the smaller one left. He was my first rtb and my first rescue.

Well at the moment breedable females are worth quite a bit more than a normal male, especially with all the new Co-dom morphs that are available.

R800 for a adult male sounds reasonable but not for a female.

It's difficult selling your first snake or ones that are so close to you. I have a few I need to sell, and just have not managed to have the heart to do so.

I do have some small yearlings for sale, snappy little buggers... If anyone is interested, send me a pm. I just don't get time to handle them to get them to calm down. I'm sure in the right home they could do well.

Well the prices I see for hatchlings are between R400 and R700 for normal RTBs..

Below a grand for an adult male seems low considering the expenses involving upkeep.

About R1000 for a 2 year old male seems reasonable.

For adult females prices vary greatly depending on the source.

Reputable breeders can ask quiet a bit for adult females: around R2000 but then you are more than likely to get a animal in top health.

2m seems a bit on the small side for an adult female. My brothers adult males are around the 2m mark and were on a strict feeding schedule to prevent obesity. I would also agree in her being under-fed and would make me think of buying her at a lower than market value for her.

Never rush buying a reptile. You will save heartache and money by finding a reliable bed reputable breeder.

Red tailed boas suffer with an HIV equivalent disease known as IBD so make sure if you intend on keeping or breeding more than one to get it disease free.

I have seen over a thousand boa constrictors and have never seen IBD. Dont worry about it.

There are very few true Red tailed Boas in South Africa. They are very expensive and do not look like any of the other boas on offer.

What you are discussing are Boa constrictor Imperator also known as Columbian boas even though this sub-species occurs over a vast area of Central and South America.

Some females from Central America will probably never even reach 2 metres in length. The South American females do grow quite a bit bigger.

I would just have the snake properly sexed to make sure it is a female and not a male.

You are very correct. Colombian boas are much darker and I haven't seen salmon hues in them.

Most pet shops sell them as Boa constrictor constrictor but are not.

My brother got his Boa constrictor constrictor trio in 2005 from a guy that immigrated and paid an arm and a leg for them.

What length do true Brazilian red tailed Boas get? The females?

My brother has 2 normal females that are almost like an olive color instead of the chocolate brown the Colombians possess. They are 8 years old and around 10 feet.

He recently bought another female hatchling which is a hypo jungle and is also very light.

I got my male from his first successful breed and Mine is definitely a male. We visually sexed the spurs to the siblings to confirm as well as tail length.
