Nice Clutch

Nice Clutch

Postby Rishaad » Fri Nov 26, 2010 10:56 am

So I was called by a friend for some assistance with his Burmese python who had started laying eggs last night. She wasn't too happy about him taking her eggs and took a swipe at him before I got there. When I got there I noticed her sitting on a few eggs. From then on the eggs just kept coming. By about midnight she had already laid 37 eggs and still had more to go. You can imagine his excitement as he did not even know his snakes had mated and this is his first clutch ever.

Unfortunately we did not have an incubator for the eggs. I gave Snakes4Africa a call and he came out all the way out to assist. Thank again bud. The incubator is awesome. Unfortunately we also did not have any vermiculite for the incubator apart from the little in the nest box and used moist fish tank wool at the bottom of the tubs.

Just spoke to my friend now and he found another 10 eggs in the lay box this morning. Not bad at all considering this snake has never been bred before. I have been offered a pair or 2 of these babies for my assistance so I hope all goes well with the eggs. Sorry for some of the crappy phone pics. Notice how she has pushed the infertile eggs to the side. These animals are more intelligent than we give them credit for.

Good one Rishaad. As per our discussion, there is room in my incubator if you need. No strings attached.

That is indeed a very nice clutch considering it is he's first clutch ever. Congratulations to him!

Very nice.
Just one question,What is used to heat up that incubator? I can see a wire going in,is it a heat pad or aquarium heater?

It is an aquarium heater submerged in water. Yes, it was built by Byron from Snakes4Africa. If I am not mistaken he has them available in 2 sizes.

Yes it is not too late for Burmese python eggs.

Hope you get a nice pair Rishaad.

Thanks Arno.

Unfortunately 7 of the eggs went bad in the incubator. They went green, smelled really bad and started leaking. I have thrown them out. There are 2 more that look very suspect as well.

Sad news Buddy. How many of the eggs are still viable?

There are 27 left in the incubator. I am still upset about the eggs that he removed from the female and threw out as he didn't even call me to check them beforehand. What a waste?

Unfortunately quite a few more eggs went funny over the incubation period until there were only 18 eggs left with still a few semi decent eggs in there.

After an incubation period of 60 days I decided to start cutting the eggs. There are 14 live babies in the eggs and 4 under developed dead babies in 4 eggs.

A nice surprise is that there are a few albino's in the clutch which is a bonus as the owner had no idea the parents were carrying hets.
