Python molurus ?

Python molurus ?

Postby Nasicornis » Mon Nov 19, 2012 11:59 am

Quick question. Can anyone advise as to what the exact current species classifications would be within the P. molurus group? How many different sub categories (species) are recognised, what are their common names and what would be the average max size? I am aware of molurus molurus and molurus bivitatus but am not quite sure about the current state of things. Thanks guys and gals.

Got this from IUCN website:

Python bivittatus was recently recognized as a full species (Jacobs et al. 2009), having previously been considered a subspecies of P. molurus.

The subspecies P. b. progschai has been erected to describe populations from Sulawesi

So I guess you get Burmese Pythons (Python bivittatus), and Indian Pythons(Python molurus).

Then you have two subspecies of Burmese Pythons, P. b. bivittatus and P. b. progschai.

Just from Googling the sizes:

P. b. progschai - 1.3 - 1.9m
P. b. bivittatus - 3.5 - 4.0m
Python molurus - 2.4 - 3.0m
