Dwarf retics and burmese

Dwarf retics and burmese

Postby Rock python » Sun Nov 03, 2013 11:44 am

Hello everybody

I have been wondering for a while now about the dwarf versions of the Burmese and reticulated pythons. Are they regular burms and retics that have been selectively bred to be dwarfs or are they a subspecies of their larger counterparts?

Secondly are there any available in South Africa?

Thank you this is my first topic posted on the site and hope I have done it right

Hi and welcome to the forum. To my knowledge, they are not bred to be smaller, they are infact from different areas and are smaller such as the Jampea Dwarf Retics. I'm not sure on the dwarf burms. There are Jampea Retics here, Sly recently hatched out a clutch infact. Sure the others will chim in soon!

From what I have heard you only get half dwarf burmese. Not sure how true it is.

There are some dwarf retics floating around. I have a lavender albino het genetic stripe female that is 2 years old on about 2.5m and then my double het albino and genetic stripe male is one and about 1.5m.
You get a dwarf which is bread to be smaller then you get a dwarf locality which are still bigger than your dwarfs and super dwarfs.

I am not too sure on the burms but I doubt you will find in S.A at the moment.

Dwarf burmese are a sub-species on their own. Python molurus progschai. They occur on the island of Sulawesi and are said to be a bit more aggressive than other Burmese or Indian pythons.
Dwarf retics are from various locailties. Not all stay small and Jampea can grow to 4.5 metres quite easily. Genetic striped retics are also dwarfs and females of less than 2 metres have been bred.
Super dwarfs have a different head shape and are more flighty. Some are also inclined to pee on you more than the other races. Any morphs of the super dwarfs excluding anerythistic will have been crossed with mainland or dwarf races.
It is easier to ask for forgiveness than permission.

Thank you very much for all the help and advice. I think I'll defiantly be saving up for a super dwarf retic.
