spitting cobra

Postby flatdog » Tue Dec 17, 2013 5:58 pm

Hi guys, I caught a Spitting cobra on the farm over the weekend, a female about 1.2m long that has promptly laid about fifteen eggs in its temporary glass tank home. Is there anybody who would like this snake who can care for it properly, otherwise I will release it back into the veld somewhere a bit further from my farm.

I don't think those eggs are going too make it, they are far to dehydrated now.
Where was the farm where you caught it?

Release the snake ASAP bud!

If you can get those eggs onto some moist vermiculite or even toilet paper for now, put them in a tub with a few small air holes. I have seen eggs in worse condition hatch provided quick action is taken now. Be careful with them and place them exactly in the same position as they are now, ie do not invert them. Put them in a dark cupboard and keep and eye on them... If they swell up and go round again you may be in business.

You never know, you might get to release a whole bunch of neonates into the wild which is an awesome thing to do!

Release the Female ASAP.
Get some normal kombuis Roller Towel, make it about 3 layers thick and cover the eggs with it, moisten the Roller Towel by sprinkling water over it, do not make it soaking wet, leave the roller towel in place, moistening it when it dries out. After about a week, lift the roller towel, and the eggs should be plumped up.
Incubate them on moist vermiculite at about 29 Centigrade.
