I definitely agree with you regarding "intelligence" ! No snake that I've worked with seems to have this trait.

I usually get chicks from national chicks or other farms in bulk.

I'm not sure what your trap box looks like, but I have found that mamba's prefer the entrance to be on top of the box and not on the side as they usually are.
