Gaboons viper

Gaboons viper

Postby Daisy10 » Tue Apr 10, 2012 8:02 pm

Good day,

I hope one of you can help me, we have a gaboon viper that eats very well, but I want to know the reseach we did said that the gravel should be mixed with play sand and moss. We feed our gaboon inside his cage and when he eats the rat there is a bit of sand on the rats hair. Will the sand effect my gaboon if he gets a bid of sand in his systems.
Thanks.

Its not going to harm the snake.but rather change the substrate to leave litter the snake would be much happier on it.

Welcome to the forum.

I recently built a new enclosure for my large Gaboon and was advised to use potting soil as substrate and it works really well. you will see that he digs into the soil and leaves just like they do in the wild.

I was told that one of the reasons a Gaboon lifts it's head when holding onto it's prey is to avoid soil and leaves from getting into his mouth. Gaboons have very sensitive digestive systems, so eating too much sand or soil could become an issue.

Have a look at this topic as well: viewtopic.php?f=97&t=28274#p229075
