I'm curious...

I'm curious...

Postby Durban Keeper » Sat Mar 28, 2009 10:45 pm

Hi all, I'm curious as to why one can't buy D. atra, medici & fasciata.

These all seem to be available in the pet trade abroad, yet I've never heard of a single specimen being kept in SA.
Why is that? For those of you who don't know, google D.fasciata & see what an amaizing looking eggie it really is.
Also, those black & deep red D.atra make my heart skip a beat each time I see them. so yeah, was just wondering why these are not available :(

Out if interest, India also has an extremely rare egg eater, Elachistodon westermanni or commonly just referred to as the Indian egg eating snake.
It looks almost like a cape file.

You're right Dean there are many cool egg eater species but when one thinks
allot of these snakes occour in "upper" Africa and i guess those countries are exporting loads of snakes so thats why perhaps they are readily available there? I suppose its like that with allot of snakes.

Man how cool is this

Well, medici are indigenous to sa, so even though they may be rare, It's the other two I'm really interested in.

Having said that tho, all the snakes you see labeled as D. medici on uk & us based forums have the dorsal 'stripe' but the coloration is different, which leads me to believe these snakes are also from further up north. Thanks for sharing tho Drummer. Have you ever seen/photographed an East African?
