Leopard gecko incubator?

Leopard gecko incubator?

Postby Leos r gr8 » Fri Jul 13, 2007 10:31 am

Hi

I was wondering when my leopard geckos lay eggs, could I incubate them in an incubator meant for birds, it has a thermostat and is powered by 4 40 watt bulbs. What modifications would I have to make to it to make it gecko friendly? When do you guys introduce your female geckos to the males, what season?

Regards Liam. B

Will the light bulbs irritate the developing eggs?, I've heard that reptile eggs dont like light, is this true?

You can happily swop the lights to red or blue bulbs and that will not irritate the eggs as much as white light.
It is easier to ask for forgiveness than permission.

Ok great,I would test that first without eggs inside,to check if the thermostat is precise enough. ;)

If you manage to get temps in the 29-30°C range then yes. ;)

Im so relieved, I was very worried that I didn't have any other full proof incubation methods. I will test the incubator thoroughly before adding any eggs. What about humidity, how can I keep it at the right level?

A small water container placed in the incubator should be enough and will do very fine.Just ensure you have enough air flow not to let condensation go on the incubator's lid. ;)
I add that you will have more success incubating on perlite or on slightly moistened coco mould than on vermiculite.turf also works well and prevents fungus development. ;)

Hi
An American guy told me not to use my bird incubator but to use a 10 gallon fish tank with a bit of water in the bottom, a fishtank heater in the water, 2 bricks also in the water and the tub with the eggs on the bricks, with clingwrap over the top. Do you think this is a better idea?, he told me that my bird incubator could not get humid enough :( How big is a 10 gallon tank?

I incubate all my eggs in the fishtank and water way, except I use a polestyrene cooler box instead of a fish tank and I have about an 90% success rate.

10 US gallons=about 45 liters,so a 50x30x30 tank ;)
Yes this method is ok but a bit complicated,as long as the incubator's air remains moist and your substrate too-with no excess- every method is fine.Too much moisture or drops falling on the eggs would make the mebryos die. ;)
