New Mini Rack Project

New Mini Rack Project

Postby Tyronen » Wed Apr 23, 2014 11:21 am

So I’ve been wanting to make a small rack for a while now but had never tried it before. When I picked up my Jungle Carpet Python recently I got a couple tips from Eugene.

I got all the wood from Timber City which they also cut to size, I was able to find a close matching colour to my existing cages. I wanted a 6 x 11L Tub system (600mm x 553mm is what I had to work with) to fit in exactly where I has some space in my existing cage setup. I'm a bit of a neat freak

So here are the supplies

Getting there

Basic shape is sorted now

Got the Backing on with some tubs in place, almost finished

Here is the open space in my cage setup where it’s going

Here is the finished result of my first mini rack project :D I had a lot of fun doing it and was easier than I thought.

Very nice! Still keen to make a rack myself, did timber city also do the routing of the groves for you?

Thanks guys!

@Mittion - some good tips mate, many thx and using the CD's as spacers worked 100% :)

@gekosin - Yes Timber City did the grooves for me as well. They use the table saw with a 3mm wide blade and they can set the depth of the blade sticking out the table to 5mm. Then they simply run the board over the blade and it cuts a groove on the underside 5mm deep and about 3.5-4mm wide. I went into the back where they cut at Timber City to show them exactly how I wanted the grooves cut done.

Hi Tyronen,

I'm also now busy with my rack......very nice design you have there.....Here's my set up I purchased 30 W heating cables bought my wood and also cut the grooves in it.
But I bought aluminium tape from the hardware store and but it in the grooves , then heating cables en then taped over it with the aluminium

It is spreading the heat very nicely and evenly you don't loose any heat going down in the wood.

I got some containers from Plastic land R44

Final Pictures the tape is very strong and it holds on to the board

@Tobiasf - I've heard of people using Alu tape but I've never seen it before in practise. I must say that's an interesting idea, kind of like your own homemade foil heating pad. Please post some pics of it all put together when you are done. It's always great to see ideas one could include in their next rack design :)

@Rad - I just built this for my own collection, I'm not a pro rack builder but plenty of guys hear are. Maybe put a wanted ad in the classified section. Or try make one yourself and we will give you some ideas to work with.
