Building a Burm room.

Building a Burm room.

Postby mw-glenn » Sat Feb 18, 2006 5:15 pm

Hi,

I've got a Wendy House that I'm planning on converting into a room for my burms and I would like some tips from any of you who have done this before. Even better if anyone lives near by (lonehill/fourways/randburg) I'd like to check out a few examples.
It's pretty big - 2.4mx3m - but I'd preferably like to use only 2/3rds or so and have some extra space for smaller cages.

Any advice?
Thanks.
G.

make sure its insulated properly mate and that you have an a/c usint with thermostat for the extreme temps.

they can be deadly if not setup correctly.

For temperature insulation I'm installing a layer of dry walling with insulation in between. It' also in a cool shaded area so that it wont much get direct sunlight and bake inside - I figure it's easier to keep it warm than cool.

Thanks Snake-5. And as far as substrate and features, should I plaster a cement floor? and build plaster-of-paris fake rock features?

I am not sure I would favour using a wendy house as a snake room, unless you mean a room with various cages in there it. From what I understand you want to create one big room for your burmese. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Even though it's a good idea, the possibility for insects, and other little critters to get into it is quite big. Then there is climate control. You will probably pick up problems with heating in winter.

tru dat
i have my snakes in a wendy house, asbestos walls with a zinc roof, winter is crazy, i have the floor covered carpet and then blankets and 2 heaters in there, that seems to help a little,

if u can get a rubber mat, that fits the floor in there, the type used on conveyor belts, 10mm thick will be good, keeps the insects out an helps with insulation as well

Does it have windows? They are a huge source of heatloss so if it does, you may need to look into doubleglazing for insulation. It might also be an idea to insulate the ceiling too. You will also need smallish air vents both at the top and the bottom for circulation so consider that when you doubleclad the walls.
A wooden room for a snake room is not the preferred option, especially when it comes to mite infestations. The ideal would be a well ventilated, temperature controlled room with a resiliant glossy non-porous surface for the walls/floor/ceiling with radiused corners and no cracks/joins. The closer you can get to that, the better.

No - no windows, but I've basically decided to insulate the walls and then just install larger cages instead of trying to convert the Wendy into a room - too much money and effort and if the Wendy does deteriorate in future I can still remove the cages.

I hope the wax oil is not for the cages.

The cages need to be finished with animal friendly coatings.

No - wax oil for Exterior wood finish - but thanks for mentioning that, it's the kind of thing that could've slipped through.

Just make sure the smell is gone before you put your beasties in the wendy house.

This thread goes back a while but here's my 2c worth if you haven't already done so. Wendy houses loose an UNBELIEVABLE amount of heat through the roof. I suggest u insulate with a combination of foil and fibreglass insulation. In terms of the wall's, I think most of the comments made are 100% accurate.

As a point of interest, how are you heating the room? Each cage individually or the whole room with one heat source?
