FEEDING ADVICE FOR BABY BEARDIES NEEDED

Postby BEARDIE&BOX » Thu Jan 08, 2009 2:44 am

Hi All

What's the best food to introduce to hatchling beardies?

Veggies, pinhead crickets or GAGA grubs, or a combination?

What you can do, is fill different bowls with different foodstuffs, place them in the enclosures at the same time and see which is most sought after...

Personally I reckon a mixture would indeed be best.
I may be schizophrenic, but at least I have each other...

Hey there Beardie&box,

I found that with most hatchling beardies, movement was key in triggering their feeding response, you may well find that crickets will do the job, pinheads or extra smalls should suffice. Having a shallow dish with diced up greens wouldn't hurt either, that way when you feed the crickets to the beardies, they may take in some veg as well. You're likely to waste a little veg doing this, but at least getting them started with some greens at a young age isn't at all bad. Once they've started feeding well, then start mixing it up a little with some ga ga's and so on. If you can get hold of some silkworms, they're also really great for your young guns.

Don't forget, calcium is a must and some multi vitamins.

Otherwise try really small lobster roaches. I had a very sick hatchling and he loved them. He looks a 100 times better, fattened up and moving around more. And they're really easy for the beardie to catch, also small silkworms are great for calcium.

We seem to have a better success rate feeding them pinhead crickets, and offering them vegetables, which are grated(sp?) very finely.

Thanks for all the advice people. My beardies, 4 days old, 2 days out of their incubator and new enclosure doesn't seem interested in eating very small crickets, I tried slowing the crickets movement by putting them in the fridge for a couple of minutes, but the babies doesn't chase after them although the seem interested by looking at their movements only?

The temp in the cage is 30 degrees. Is this unusual or do they need more time to adapt to their new environment?

Sometimes they wont eat for the first week, very similar to snakes. Just ensure you keep them warm and they have sufficient water (very shallow dish) and they should take crickets as soon as they are ready.

Bushbaby: Thx for the comments, I noticed today that some are starting to chase after the crickets and eating them! Will seperate the weak ones and feed them in a seperate container.
