Feeding baby egg eaters.

The albino egg eater is being kept with some females. Hopefully they have not been mated with before and will thus produce het albino babies in the future.

Here is a picture of the females feeding on quail eggs (he is still being force fed)


The female in the picture laid 4 eggs of which one went off early on. 2 months later I managed to hatch 3 babies which should be het for albino.

They are tiny and are being force fed with a thin tube. I hope to get them on to finch eggs pretty soon.

Have they not attempted to take finch eggs?

i have had that size take finch eggs.

I cannot get decent finch eggs at the moment.

I give them a bit till I see the tummy swell up. I have not measured it but will check that for you.

It's still breeding season for birds, should be readily available.

Yes you can but at that size they usually feed on Quail eggs without a problem.

Albino Egg eater, I didnt even know. Awesome.
I have raised babies on Bengal Finch eggs from the start. Speak to the guys breeding Gouldians, they give the eggs to the Bengals to foster so they turf the Bengal eggs. Get in on that action and you will have an unending supply.
I used to collect 70 or so at a time.

BV, I'm so pleased for you! please keep us updated on these little one's progress. I wonder why the albino won't accept an egg on his own? do you know the sexes of the babies as yet?

The albino just seems to be highly strung. They are all in one cage so it cannot be caging conditions.

I have not bothered to sex the babies yet. They are tiny and it does not really matter at this stage. I do however hope they are not all males.

Bushviper, I have tried tube feeding my two baby d.scabras but with limited succes. I have the tube and the syringe but can't figure out how far to push the tube down the throat. I have found on both occassions now the egg seems to push back up out of the mouth. Do you have any rules of thumb in this regard? I tried just getting the tube into the throat region where I felt an egg would be held whilst eating and then tried pushing it a couple of cms further but with the same results.

I know it's winter now but If anyone knows of any stocks of finch eggs in the Durban / Maritzburg area I would REALLY appreciate some help - Rob maybe? I would really like to just get them a good feed before settling down for winter.
