Water drip system or something

Water drip system or something

Postby sylar » Wed Feb 18, 2009 11:26 pm

Hi Everyone,

I have just got a veiled chameleon. I don't have a water drip system. Does anyone know what my best option is? I don't have a water source near my chameleon cage, so I would need something which I would fill with water, and it would circulate it and drip it.

Any ideas of a cheap easy to get hold of thing for this?
Where would I get it from?

thanks
Shaun

I use my spray bottle everyday. I find it to be very effective.

Easy and cheap, take a container dont need to be to big, Depending of type of enclosure but if you have one with a mesh top or even a wooden one this idea will work. Use the container and cut/drill a hole in the bottom. Now put in a rubber tube ane seal the edges around the tube with silicone. Get a valve that the use in fish tanks and put it on the end of the tube. Set the valve to desired drip speed and there you go. If you have a wooden tank just drill a hole big enough for the tube. The tube does not need to be very long.
Dont bite, strike!!!!

Dont keep it real, keep it EXOTIC!!!

Hi Everyone,

Thanks alot for the replies.
I will try that drip thing with the tube.

What do you guys mean to mist? I have a spray bottle which sprays a mist of water. Must I just spray all the leaves, branches and the chameleon every day? How many times? and also, must I drench him? or just wet him a bit?

Thanks a lot

cheers

Sylar It also depends where you stay.
Ie. Down Near The Cost there is More Humidity then Being Inland where the air is much dryer ect.
But personally i Mist or Misting, where you get a spray bottle and spray the enviroment where the Chameleon is
DO NOT spray the chameleon directly this will do them no good you will see they do not like
being in contact with it.
I prefer keeping any extra's out of the enclosure like pipes ect.

Personally i Mist my Animals twice a day once in the morning then again in the early evening, generously spray all the foliage
be it plastic or live plants which you are keeping inside the enclosure.
What set up are you currently using?
Post a picture or two.

hi there
you should look for a mist bottle which you can actually pump up to pressure and then just hold the handle in - it gives more even spray, finer droplets, lasts for a couple of minutes and saves you aching hands!! You essentially need to spray until you see the chameleon start to lick the droplets from the leaves or glass, it can take a little while sometimes. You could also look at a waterfall setup, they are attracted to moving water and ours used to drink direct from the waterfall so we only misted to raise the humidity...

The easiest way is to get a plastic draft cup or other plasitc food tub. Heat up a needle and pock a hole from the inside of the container. Your looking to get a fairly rapid drip. This will draw the chames attanetion to the water movment. I have found it works really well and lasts a good few minutes sometimes over 30 min. The dripping should hit the folage so they can lick it off.

Good luck with your new cham!

Hi,

Thanks for all your comments. I live in JHB, so I am inland, and therefore less Humidity here.
I have him in a Wooden enclosure with a mesh back, and glass front. There are Vents on the sides.
I have been spraying him and the leaves and branches in the cage about 3-4 times a day. He doesn't like being sprayed, so I am not sure I should spray him or not.
He is eating nicely(Superworms and Roaches & Crickets).
I have not seen him drink, and when I spray the leaves etc, he goes down into the 'jungle' and I don;t see him drink.
Is this all ok?

I don;t know how to post an image of him or his enclosure, so please let me know how, and I will.

thanks

Ok,
Here are the images of my enclosure and Hector.
Let me know what you think. And am I misting correctly? I am drenching the leaves and branches about 3 times a day with the spray bottle?

thanks

Cool, glad to see you came right with those images.
Do you Ever See the chameleon drink when you mist Or spray.
What i tend to do is get some large leafed "plants" be it plastic or natural and often the water will form in small pools the chameleons will often lap that up.
Mist the enclosure loads remember they dont like being directly.

Thanks a lot. What do you have?
I am quite new to keeping reptiles.
I got a Beardie last year around august, and now the Chameleon. I really love these guys. they make great pets.
I took my chameleon out to handle a bit today, and he was walking up my arm, but seemed to try and walk to the under side of my arm. He nearly fell off. I got quite a fright...
How do I get him to walk more safely on me without the risk of falling?

What set up do you have?
Also, I am planning on getting a flexarium of sorts, or building my own encloisure to put in my garden, and then he can live half in the garden, and half in the house..
what you guys think of that?
cheers
