Help needed to identify snake

Postby robinkt » Mon Apr 24, 2006 9:31 am

Just been up to Limpopo and came across a small (think it's young) snake approx 25cm - olive on top with very yellow belly. Want to know what it is - have picture but very blurred, but someone might be able to identify from the pic. Sorry but I wasn't going to get too close and friendly!! Help would be greatly appreciated. Also whilst in Limpopo saw my first wild Egyptian Cobra - stunning, but was not going to look too closely. Being a Brit, I'm not as hardy as you lot down here and will only view from a distance!! Assistance would be greatly appreciated. How do I send anyone the pic for identification? Many thanks. Robin

In my opinion that looks like a red lipped herald, although the yellow belly does not quite make sense as they usually have white bellies, but from what I can see, that is what I would ID it as.

It could also be a young Snouted Cobra. Their bellies should be yellow, but usually they would make a hood.

Yip That is a heraldsnake. They can have red orange yellow purple or white lips.

Usually the olive colour and the white specks that look like fly eggs is a give away on a baby or juvenile herald snake.
