Wow! lots of babies!

Wow! lots of babies!

Postby Wvipera » Mon Oct 12, 2009 8:13 pm

A white lip tree viper female that i have been caring for at the snake park where i work at recently dropped a pile of babies.
32 live healthy youngsters to be exact. This is her third successful breeding (1st year - 18 babies, 2nd year - 22). She also dropped 2 still borns and 1 slug. The second female we have is also heavily gravid and this will be her third breeding as well. Interestingly, her first breeding yielded 17 babies and second yielded 24, so would be interesting to see if she matches up to the first female.
Just thought I'd share this with everyone, here are the babies . . .

Very nice clutch! Now for the fun and games getting them all to eat.

very nice, can't wait to get my babies!
just wondering, is it true that males have a solid white line on the side of their bodies running from tail to head and females not?

Jees!
Do you have a picture of the female pre birth perhaps?

Eish! I'm so glad its not me who has to feed the hordes! I vaguely recall reading a thread saying they're particularly difficult when it comes to the first feed and that they usually have to be force fed. Is that true?

@ Loretta: White-lips generally need to be force fed their first few meals unless you can get hold of plenty of tiny geckos or frogs. Some take scented pinks nicely and some are born as eating machines and will take pinks without hassle.

The white-lips we breed at Northlands were rather easy to get feeding. Once they had shed most started to take pinky parts but the key with these guys is patience. They would often strike at the piece of pink but not hold on then finally after a couple of attempts they would hold on, then you have to keep as still as possible until the pink was a fair way down it's throat. Some of the other babies ate later, once you noticed them slithering on the floor of the enclosure you knew they were looking for food and would go mental when food was in their cage, striking at it non-stop, until finally they would hold on.

@ BB Gabonica: Thanks for the info!

No offense to anyone, but it certainly does not sound like fun to me!

They are very cute, however....
