Aren't red eared sliders illegal to keep? As that's what I was told when considering one, I may be wrong but I met the people who confiscate non-indigenous chelonians for Kzn wildlife and they had a big fenced pond for all these. Seems like you had a good time at Kruger, some good finds especially of the lizard kind ;)

On the website http://another website I read that since 2007 anyone keeping a slider may keep it,but you must destroy any eggs accidentally produced and you may not sell or buy sliders.

I still wish i could get a few more, Anyone??? :D :D

Dont trust what you read on other websites. This is from the Gauteng Provincial ordinance:
Prohibited acts with exotic animals
44. (1) No person shall-
(a) import into the Province or convey or set free therein a live exotic animal;
(b) convey, keep, possess, sell, purchase, donate or receive as a donation a live exotic animal referred to in Schedule 6 to this Ordinance.
unless he is the holder of a permit which authorizes him to do so: Provided that any person may convey in the Province an exotic pet animal or exotic bird, excluding such animal or bird referred to in Schedule 6 to this Ordinance.
(2) The Administrator may be by notice in the Provincial Gazette amend, substitute or repeal Schedule 6 to this ordinance.
(3) Any person who contravenes or fails to comply with subsection (1) shall be guilty of an offence.

SCHEDULE 6

EXOTIC ANIMALS TO WHICH THE PROVISIONS OF SECTION 44 APPLY

Common name Scientific name

all species of exotic tortoises, all exotic species of the Order Chelonia
turtles and terrapins

Presumptions and evidence
110. (1) Where at criminal proceedings in terms of this Ordinance-
..........
(f) it is proved that a live wild animal or exotic animal was found in circumstances indicating that such animal is being kept, the owner or occupier of the land on which the animal was found shall be deemed to have kept such animal;

General penalty
111. (1) Any person convicted of an offence in terms of this Ordinance for which no penalty is expressly provided for shall be liable to a fine not exceeding R750 or to imprisonment for a period not exceeding 9 months or to both such fine and such imprisonment.

However if they decide to prosecute you under the Biodiversity act then you face the following:
A person convicted of an oflence in terms of section 101 is liable to a fine, or to imprisonment for a period not exceeding five years, or to both fine and such imprisonment.
(2) A fine in terms of subsection (1) may not exceed-
(a) an amount prescqbed in terms of the Adjustment of Fines Act, 1991 (Act No.101 of 1991);

So either way you are looking at a confiscation, a fine and quite possibly imprisonment but it will not be longer than 5 years.

Is your terrapin really worth all that hassle?

Ales these terrapins die quite easily in indoor aquaria so that took care of quite a few. The others have been donated to zoos and reptiles parks who are allowed to keep them but not breed them. The authorities recently nailed a guy in Pretoria on similar charges and he got a R20 000-00 fine and a suspended sentence of 5 years which is now hanging over his head.

I remember somewhere in an article where this particular species had managed to inhabit a small pond in durban somewhere, one of the reasons for the ban on them they have proven to be quite prolific.
