Incubator?

Incubator?

Postby ben0727945311 » Tue Apr 01, 2008 8:27 pm

Im thinking of building an incubator for corn snake eggs and was wondering if my idea would work:

A fish tank filled with a littlebit of water a water heater in the water

then i would take plastic tubs with the eggs and vemiculite and put it in the water

would this keep a stable tempreture in the plastic tubs?

Does anyone have any tips or pointers i could use in my building of the incubator

Thanks

You need to isolate the fish tank with polystyrene because the glass alone wont keep the necessary heat. If you tune the heater the temps should be constant in the tubs.

I prefer to use a "polystyrene tub" with a 100w heater instead its allot easier because its all ready isolated no extra work is needed.

This is a incubator that I build for my eggs it worked fine all my eggs hatched and temperature was the same.

You can try a petshop or any other shop that sells fish. If you don't like using bricks you can try to get a old fridge rack they would work really nice.
I opened my incubator daily to ensure that it is filled with fresh air so I didn't need a "window".

You'll be fine ben I've recently hatched my ball python eggs in something like that and while I know they are different snakes (wow gee wizz really)
with a bit of insulation you shoud do great. PS heat escapes upwards so your insulation would need to be on the top too, but maybe a small window in the polystyrene lid.

Do the tubs have to be in the water or just ontop

The tub must be ontop of the water.

Re: Incubator?

Hey guys.

Im currently building a incubator for my beardie eggs that are about to be laid.
Im using the same method as jka in this post, the polystyrene box with grid and aquarium
heater.

I have one question: Must the tub with eggs actually be submerged in the water a bit or can i fill water right up to the grid and place the tub on top, that way the bottom of the tub is touching the surface of the water and is still getting enough heat.

Im sorry if it really makes no difference :-?

The current temperature of the water is 32 C and inside the box it is 30 C,
Is that ok?
What a world....

Hi Ales.

I also have a similar incubator for my snake eggs and I suggest the water level to be just below the grid and the egg box on the grid.

How are you measuring the temps? The reason I''m asking is that the temperature of the water is irrelevant. What matters is the temperature of the substrate the eggs are resting on.

What I did was to attach the aquarium heater to a external thermostat. The probe of the external thermostat is then placed in the substrate. That way you always have the substrate at the perfect temperature.

Makes sense?

Thanks westley.

Im measuring the temps with a submergable aquarium thermometer for the water and the substrate temps with a normal doctor thermometer, the glass ones with the mercury.I know its not accurate but its all i have for now,and it reads a constant 30 C.
Ill go tomorrow to buy a digital thermometer to stick in the substrate to get an accurate reading.

I dont know if ill have time to get a thermostat, will the thermostat on the aquarium heater not be good enough?

If i seperate the egg tub from the water surface the temp will probably stay the same,30 C,right?

Thanks
