Birth of Bitis cornuta (Many Horned Adder) babies - 13 Feb 2

Coffee tastes so much better on a Saturday morning when you see this.

Technically these are not indigenous as the parents came from Luderitz, Namibia but many folks would class them as indigenous, so I put them in the indigenous section.

I'm not sure how long gestation was because I never saw mating besides a little jerky dance from the male now and then. She has been carrying a noticeable weight for at least 3 months so gestation was over 3 months.

5 living and 2 still born so far. There may be another 1 or 2 yet to be born.

It has been a dream for decades to breed these and it finally happened. I am beyond happy!

Thanks for the comments everyone.

The mother is trying to push one more baby out. I'm standing there, camera ready, for minutes on end whilst she does her squeezing motions. Shame she looks exhausted. I hope she drops it soon and I hope its alive....

You guys on the South Coast are putting some viagra in the water I see.
Is it not very late in the season for them to be dropping?

Well done

Nice going. Now for the barrage of people who are suddenly your best friend and want to know how much for a pair of babies. Lets hope she still drops one or two more.

Thanks for the great comments everyone!

The female is still struggling to bear the last baby (or afterbirth?). Every few minutes she goes through contractions and tries to squeeze. Then she rests a few minutes. A few minutes ago i tubed her and tried to help by palpation and massage and nothing came of it. I have decided to stop messing with nature and just let her be.

They're so awesome, congrats.
Best of luck further.
