burms and retics together?

Postby Jamster » Tue May 04, 2010 8:52 pm

I have a male 1.8metre retic and a 1.4metre burm female.

They are doing great together. I separate them when i feed and for a while afterwards.
Other than that i havent
had any problems.

Has anybody who has kept burms and retics together got any advice?

I would say it's fine to keep them together as they require the same temperatures and humidity etc and they're both "big" snakes. Just watch them when they get to breeding size as these 2 species wil hybridize and I wouldn't really recommend that. Just my oppinion. Not the biggest fan of hybrids. Other than that, I'm sure they'll be happy living together. :D

Bateaters are stunning snakes but from what I have read they almost impossible to produce or I am sure we would see more of them.

Bateater? That's an interesting name...
How does one derive that name from this pairing?

The name Borneo Bateater was given to these snakes because it sounded better than Bastard python or Bad news Python.

My advice would be "don't do it!!!" Hybrids, no matter how pretty don't do our hobby/business any good. These snake can and do hybridise. Your snakes are currently too small to breed, but the time will come and you will be sorry.
Furthermore, just from a practical side, even separating them for feeding can become problematic when they get bigger.
Those who have made no mistakes have learned nothing and can teach nothing.
The same is true of those who continue to make the same mistakes.

they are together for the time being, just until i have more space. i definately want to breed with and specialise in python and boas, but i want to keep 'real' or 'pure' breed snakes, a.k.a no hybrids! separating when feeding isnt much of a prob for now coz the tank is made from 2 tanks joined side by side wich makes it about 2.3m long, the join has a solid divider that can be put in, but they will definately be separate when they are older, im going to get mates 4 them.
