Berg Adder Bite

Postby shamroth » Wed Jun 30, 2010 2:44 pm

As some of you may have heard I suffered my first major snake bite on Sunday, after being surprised by a berg adder while out hiking.

Was released from hospital yesterday. No neurological symptoms have shown, just a lot of swelling, up to my shoulder, and necrosis around the bite site on the middle finger of my right hand. Swelling began immediately after the bite reaching its peak after about 6 hours, and is still slowly decreasing. And need I even mention that the pain is excruciating! My symptoms were not as bad as they could have been but still not an experience I would recommend to anyone.

Will post pics when I get a chance to upload them.

Sorry to hear that glad it was not severe.

How exactly did it happen?

Seriously ironic... A snake guy getting bitten by mistake!
Not nice!!

I wouldn't have expected that much necrosis from a Berg Adder bite. I always assumed their bite only causes minor necrosis with mostly neurological symptoms.

Well I guess that is mild necrosis compared to a Puff Adder bite.

I think you will be surprised how "shallow" the necrosis is once you take the dead skin and tissue off. The key here is to keep it clean.

Good luck and please take pictures at regulat intervals.
