URGENT! Nhlangwane

Postby Jen » Sat Aug 07, 2010 8:46 am

Hi there
Does anyone know which snake the Zulus refer to as "Nhlangwane"? I don't have my book with me & have a patient with a snake bite

Did you see the snake? Or could he describe it for us? Is the spelling also 100? Don't know the word and also can't find it to research on....

The child has been referred as a night adder bite... The granny killed the snake & it was sent to the base hospital, but not on to us at the referral hospital. It was about 1m long, 3cm diameter, light brown in colour with 'fawn' spots on it. She is sure there were no dark brown / black markings. and when I showed her the pics of a night adder she says it isn't the correct snake... She insists it was not a puff adder
Any other ideas in the South Coast area of KZN. Predominant cytotoxic effects but only 17 hours since the bite

Hey Jen,

Garter Snake? (Elapsodeia sundevalli)

Also markings do differ on night adders and maybe the one in question was not boldly marked.

How severe is the swelling?

What about something like an olive grass snake or something to that degree.

I came on duty to find this little one (8 months old)post fasciotomy - she had incredibly high pressures in her forearm. At surgery they found dusky muscle so it was a good call - she had an established compartment syndrome.
She was bitten on the hand, the swelling is extending up to her neck and face. Blood profiles all normal so far (except for anaemia) but she did bleed a bit in surgery

I've always known the Night adder as Nhlangwane.
Jen If its down here in Toti you can be pretty sure that's what it is.
At 1m long its an old girl and her colouration may have faded somewhat.

By any chance, Natal Black snake, but she said its not black , rather light Brown.

Thinking about a night adder, pretty shure its one.

Okay great many thanks!
Rob - she was bitten in Port Shepstone.
So now I know that the only thing to watch out for are the local effects - from my reading there are no other effects (e.g. liver, kidney, coagulation etc)
So, it's just good pain relief and TLC for this little one

- I also immediately thought Natal Black or Green Mamba.

Amphibian, Yellow and Black sea snake maybe?

Sorry mods and Jen, couldn't help it.

Shame, I hope the little one feels better soon.

For those of you who are interested... Granny gave permission for photos to be taken:

This is her, showing the swelling of her upper arm. She was bitten on the hand. She is post surgery so I cannot photograph the lower arm at this point as she has new dressings on:

The poor little thing has swelling up to her neck & face:
