Boomslang bite

Postby swazi » Thu Sep 02, 2010 7:49 am

Received a call from a hospital for monovalent antivenom. A young girl was bitten last weekend by a Boomslang and was in a very bad way. I didn't think she was going to make it, but after only two days, she is running around! Isn't life great?

That's fantastic. I have been told that monovalent is incredibly effective but even after almost a week I would've thought the chances of it working were greatly reduced. How many vials did they use?

Hi Swazi
Did you get any information around how she happened to be bitten? I would assume that accidental boomslang bites are comparatively rare? I’m glad she’s ok though.

Wonderful news Swazi :-D
As michael asked is there any further info regarding the circumstances leading up to the bite, and possibly the position of the bite etc etc..?

Glad she is ok. You are a life saver! :smt023 Seems we all very interested in how it happened. We have a big boomie female that inflates every time and you really have to watch her. They all have their own personality but to get bitten you have to accidentally step on or handle. Has anyone heard of a case where one has just bitting for no reason rather than flee?

Bjorn ,that’s why I asked the question. I have never heard of a case like that. In captivity the likelihood of a Boomslang biting you would increase. In the wild they are just so quick and keen to get out of your way so that’s why I’m very interested to find out what happened here.

Geoff Lockwood's bite:

was also discussed on this site, here:

Thanks phish. There was mention of it being stepped on in the second thread. Thats would be enough of a reason to provoke a bite.

She was picking wild banana's and grabed the snake by mistake. It bit her on her hand. I did not take pics because I thought she was going to die. Bleeding from everwhere with big blood blotches under her skin. (Typing on phone)
