eastern egg eater????!!!!

Postby curtis48 » Tue Nov 16, 2010 5:31 pm

So I was looking through Gumtree and found an add.The title was (Eastern Egg eater for sale). Well i thought he ment East African Egg Eater, But in the advert it says the snake is over 1m and it was for R200 but the maximum East African Egg Eaters grow is 90cm. So i thought it is probably a rhomic or southern egg eater. I phoned the guy and he says the snake eats chicken eggs from the store and it only eats in summer. The next question i asked him is if it is cb or wc and he said he bought it in a pet shop! but im sure cb eat in winter and wc dont. Anyway i thought it was very cheap with a wooden cage so i told him im going to buy it (for the snakes sake)

Sounds too good to be true, but if you don't take it I will!

If local, and wild still, why do you not consider introducing it back to the wild?
Just a thought.
If it's an expat, please keep it safe.

Myself a big fan of the rhombic egg eater, just love it's character.

You cannot return the snake "to the wild" as its locality is not known and it could have picked up some exotic disease in the shop which will now be spread back into the wild.

Keep it and breed it and reduce the demand for people to go snake collecting.

Selling indigenous snakes out of pet shops is legal in KZN

I strongly suspect that this is a Southern Brown Egg Eater.

Well, I noticed last night that the seller reposted an ad on Gumtree with the price dropped to R200. I figured that since a couple of days have passed and it was a new ad, if the snake was still available I would go for it.

I called the seller and he sounded like a very decent oke, and yes, the snake was still available. He offered to bring it into work (Westville) this morning for my collection. I have to say, WOW! Definitely a Southern as suggested by Roland, and definitely the biggest I've ever seen. There is no doubt in my mind that it can eat a chicken egg or two from Pick 'n Pay.

The snake looks in excellent condition and has obviously been well cared for. I ended up chatting to the seller for over an hour, what a nice chap! Turns out we actually have a lot in common, and the topics discussed ranged from snakes and other reptiles, to fishkeeping, to motorbikes and cars.

So it turned out to be a squeaky clean deal, and here is a pic for those who missed out:

This is a good day, I'm stoked!
