Why did this snake die???

Postby Durban Keeper » Wed Dec 29, 2010 10:02 am

It's at times like this I just feel like throwing in the towel. This is a captive bred male aurora I received as a hatchling & it's never given me a day's hastle. He fed on pinks with very little effort & was by far the best feeder of all my aurora snakes. 2 days ago I checked on him & he was fine & today I find him like this!!! What the heck?

Im heartbroken to say the least.

Sorry about your loss dean, it's never nice to have a snake die on you, especially if you do not know the cause.
But don't let this event deter you from keeping snakes. Death is part of every living thing and should be seen as a way to learn even more about this great hobby

Why did this snake die???

Because you killed it?

Just joking. How often were you feeding it? Perhaps it got too hot?

Shame Bru. That's quite tragic. I've seen snakes do this when the temps have been way too high, not sure if that helps.

The fact that the snake bit itself is often a sign of something major like a neurological problem or a back injury or even some type of poisoning. It looked fat and healthy so I doubt it is anything you did wrong.

I no the feeling, lost a real beautiful horned adder once, and wanted to throw in the towel.
I have seen this happen with a corn snake a few years back, the area were it did bite it self had a dark green almost black spot on it. I considered it to be a bacterial infection of some sort or maybe impaction.
Your boy looks in good health !

He was a little skittish, but no more then aurora's usually are. He took a pink once every 7-10 days without fail and the snake was kept off heat. I guess with life comes death, but I was really chuffed with this little guy. Thanks for the input guys.

Dean, could heat not have been a problem perhaps?
My next guess/ idea would have been as BV said above...

Am sorry for your loss my friend, :smt012

I saw this,

I meant the ambient temps/ heat as we had a scorcher of a day yesterday and today?

Add this little captive bred male semi to the list. He hatched 2 seasons ago & If I think of the effort I went through to get him to where he was now, it just makes makes me want to cry :( What a day.

Is it also biting himself???

I believe its something to do with today's weather about 60% of my snakes were in their water bowls when i got home from work today.

Hey DK,

Really sorry to read this post. I know how you were so stoked with how well your snakes were doing especially these two. Really a bummer. Don't give up dude sometimes things just happen for reasons we cannot always explain.

Sorry again mate.

Heck DK this is just such bad luck!
With two snakes of different species and in apparently great condition biting themselves to death - that must be due to something specific happening in that environment. It would be really useful if someone could confirm the high ambient temp theory? Perhaps being Durban, the humidity may also contribute? It gets stinking hot in PMB too especially Jan and Feb.
Sorry Bud.
