Construction Site Lizards

Postby Eddie » Mon Feb 14, 2011 10:16 am

We found 18 eggs on a construction site in Thohoyandou (Venda) and yesterday they started to hatch (6 out already).
Can someone please ID them and tell us where to release them (near a dam, bush) ?

Lovely find!

These are Nile or Water Monitors (Water Leguaan) - Varanus niloticus - You can release them in some thick bush near a dam.

If you wanna find out what's behind these cold eyes, you'll just have to claw your way through this disguise.

That is a Nile Monitor -Varanus niloticus.

You can release them somewhere where there is plenty of cover ( Vegetation ect) Near River or a dam would be perfect try get as close as possible to where you found the eggs though.

Hi Eddie, Those hatchling lizards you have there are water monitors(likkewaan) Try and release them close to a dam (preferably a dam withing a nature reserve since they need allot of space) Try and feet them some chiken livers(chopped into very small pieces) before you release them,,,this will at least give them a boost in thier new enviroment:)

Btw would you maby consider selling one? Ive been lookinf for a hatcling for so long......

It is illegal to sell/keep these animals in most provinces, including Gauteng and Limpopo, without permits.

Even if you do have permits to keep Water Monitors, that does not mean you can collect one from the wild to fill your quota.

So what should i do? Go and buy some from a overseas dealer and make them ship it in illigally, and then the poor things end up dying? And im not taking it directly from the wild! Im taking it as a HATCHLING.

So because the animal is a hatchling, it is not from the wild? You logic is slightly flawed.

I quote from the forum rules:

You agree that you will not use this site to promote, organise or convey any illegal activity whatsoever. Breaking this rule will result in the termination of your account and your access disabled with immediate effect.

So please keep your "deals" off the forum.

what i meant by that is im not taking a fully grown WILD monitor DIRECTLY from a natural enviroment it grew into,,im taking it as a hatchling, which is way better. Pet trade developed by taking animals from the wild and breeding them. so by your sense of logic i take it that the whole pet trade is wrong aswell?? There is nothing wrong with taking from the wild!

Except that it is illegal and you can get a huge fine, go to jail or both.
