HELP - CAN YOU PLEASE IDENFITY THIS SNAKE

Postby Odette » Fri Mar 11, 2011 4:39 pm

This morning we were digging our veg patch over, and unearthed the snake in the picutre. Our snake book does not have any snake that is identical to our mystery snake. Can any body please tell me anything out the snake? It has a very pointy head, small eyes, and a thick body. Its length is about 35 cm. Very shiny speciman. It is the 3rd snake like it in our garden, one a bit bigger, another just a small baby (10cm). She/he lives underground, nearish the surface. We thought a mole snake, but it is totally non-aggessive. We carefully kept him/her in a bucket, until we finished in the garden, the snake was returned to her same spot unharmed. We live in Bedford, Eastern Cape
Please help!

That in fact is not a snake but a Legless Skink. By the looks of it Acontias melgaris
They of course are harmless.

Thank you! No wonder the snake book did not help! Can it bite, as we try not harm anything, and vice versa

They can "bite" but its more of a pinch they dont really have teeth as such.
Good on you!

They can bite and they infact have small, but many strong teeth.
