Lucky scrape with Night Adder

Well, I was feeding a rather large toad to my Night Adder last night.

As the toad was quite fiesty, I decided that maybe I should remove the water bowl to give the snake more room.

I figured that since the snake is attached to the frog, there would be little risk in quickly grabbing the bowl and removing it.

Wrong.....



As I reached for the bowl, the toad suddenly pulled loose from the snake, and in a flash I got tagged on my ring finger.

It stung a bit like a bee sting, but luckily it wasn't too bad. This morning the finger is slightly discoloured and my wrist and elbow joints ache a bit.

Note to self... Never, ever do that again! I can't believe how quickly it happened!

Add my name to your list Fooble, it was the one and only tag *touch wood* that has ever drawn blood in probably 25yrs of keeping, handling and removing reptiles. I don't take chances ever, whether it be a corn or a venomous they all treated with the same healthy respect.

Sorry to hear you got tagged mate , it provides a valuable lesson on how quick reptiles can be when you think they otherwise busy or not interested. Enjoy the sensations and the symptoms, I know I did, experiencing the effect of the venom first hand, you should be all good in about two or three weeks.

The finger is still a bit stiff, but no other symptoms so it seems that the worst is over.

Someone should do a topic on nighties, like that awesome Actractaspis bibronii one that was made a while ago. Night adders are highly underestimated, the pain is unbelievable! Remebering that their venom flow control isnt the greatest coupled with the fact that their venom glands can be up to 10cm long!... Ive taken a solid bite aswell, made my entire arm swell up from a bite on the finger... "Join the club, we've got jackets". I know exactly what you mean smeegle. I dont keep venemous, but i do keep some guys that are growing rapidly, its just a momentary lapse of reason that causes you to think that you can just "quickly take it out while hes eating". At least it wasnt a serious bite...

I lolled at this... same happened to me at school, takes one of those to put you on solid ground again. Rather causus than something else!
