Egg eater food alternative

Egg eater food alternative

Postby Alkaline » Mon Apr 11, 2011 9:31 pm

Hi all :smt006
I have a yearling egg eater that feeds on quail eggs, but they are rather pricey and quite hard to get hold of in my part of the world.
Is it possible for me to whisk an egg and leave it in a small dish in his cage?
If not, what can I do?
Thanks in advance :-D

P.S. I tried syringe feeding him, but that didn't work.

Alkaline

IMO, this is something that I personally hate when people try and keep animals they cant feed properly!
Im glad you are at least asking for help in this matter.

Where are your part of the world, then people in that area that keeps snakes might be able to assist you.
It will not drink egg from a bowl...or not that I know!

Im not personally attacking you!!!

No they wont drink from a bowl ever.
Egg's pricey Is that sarcasm?

Bare in mind a egg eater of the size you state will eat any eggs smaller and including the size you stipulated.
Find any smaller eggs or you can try tube feeding it. When did it last feed ect?

If it's wild caught(I'm not saying it is) and you can't find eggs for it,rather release it where it came from.

Syringe feeding is only for snakes that refuse to eat,if its eating, rather avoid this.

These snakes don't need to eat often and in summer you only need to find an egg for it every 2 weeks. Go raid bird nests if you have to (pigeons, doves, Indian mynas).
I'm sure if you look hard enough there is someone in your area that breeds birds and can supply you one every 2 weeks.

Also check pet shops, i used to have a good contact list with all the local pet shops who keep birds to keep any eggs they may have from store birds.
As Ales said in winter they don't need to be fed at all.

A quick walk through any pet shop should normally turn up quite a few eggs just lying around in the bottom of the cages.

I agree, ask your pet shop, they may be willing to collect and sell to you.

Thanks for the replies.
@ Fooble, where I buy my quail eggs, it's R50 for 18 of them, and that's the smallest pack.

Thats a good price compared to some of the pet shops here(some shops are R5 an egg),pity about the min quantity though.
Maybe you should get another 8 egg eaters, then you can give them 2 each a month, and you sorted :D

Those eggs will last for a few months in the fridge. I would suggest you get another egg eater or a monitor to eat the others. These are sold as food so you can boil them up and use them in salads. That way you will look all fancy and your snake still gets his food.
