Buying Baby Leopard Tortoise HELP!

Postby infrared » Sun Jun 19, 2011 10:55 pm

I am thinking of buying 2 baby leopard tortoises.

I know a breeder who can supply me with proof that the babies where bred and hatched in captivity with photos. According to the breeder, I do not need a permit until the babies are 3 years of age.

What are your thoughts about the above? Is the seller doing anything illegal? The shop owner at a pet store told me that I could get fined R12 000.00 each if I were to get caught with them. I am in the process of contacting the breeder to ask him for a copy of the permits of the parents. Is buying them this way illegal and what else can I do to make sure everything is legal?

What province are you in? As far as I'm aware, u may not keep them outside of KZN. Why would they only need a permit when they're 3?! That's like only getting your birth certificate when you turn 21..

This is a junkmail scam which has been discussed before... Don't get yourself sucked into one of these scams.

If I were you I would stay away from leopard tortoise's. There is alot of other nice exsotics out there that is much more pretty than that tortoise like a Iguana or Burmese Python.

All tortoises require permits no matter which province you are in or how old they are. If the "breeder" has permits he would know this. Fake permits have also been involved in some of these scams so confirm that they are real first.

Exotic tortoises are outlawed in most provinces.

We are in Gauteng. So if everything checks OK, is it worth it to try or will there be no chance of getting a permit?

You will be allowed one tortoise so make sure the permit is approved BEFORE you pay for it or go fetch it.
