Can you identify this Cobra?

Postby Marc » Sat Jul 16, 2011 11:39 am

A friend of mine came across this Cobra in the Kafue National Park in Zambia a few weeks ago. He said he has never seen a snake like this in these parts.

Estimated to be just under 2m in length but completely black, no other colourings, bands, spots or anything else, just black.

Thoughts were it may be of the spiting variety but, despite the snake being quite agitated it never did spit.

They managed to get quite a few pics of the snake and any help in identification would be most appreciated.

Thanks

Marc

I agree black-necked spitting cobra, Naja nigricollis nigricollis. Saw N. nigricollis woodi in the Namaqualand near Van Rhyns Dorp. They are lovely, you walk up to just less than a meter from it, it turns back, spreads a hood, and then slithers away. :D
