Exhibitionist snake

Postby Bushviper » Thu Sep 14, 2006 6:21 am

At the last expo a friend of mine acquired a snake which had some sentimental value. This female burmese python belonged to the late Paul Ohlsen who died while doing a demonstration at the Transvaal Snake Park. He took a bite from a snouted cobra and then due to incompetence of the medical staff who were called he died before even getting to hospital. My friend was supposed to have worked that weekend in Paul's place.

Anyway this python had grown to close to 5 meters in length and had never been near a male. Housing such a big snake is not easy so she went to the Rhino and Lion Park near Krugersdorp in the Cradle of Mankind. Here she was placed in a huge cage and had a room mate who originated from the Pretoria zoo. They liked each other a lot!

Yesterday she laid between 40 and 50 eggs and they will not be incubated but left on display to hatch. She seems to be a good mother and gets edgy when you come close to her.

If any of you want to see her she is in the reptile centre up at the recreation area. Apparently this is the first time that a python will be incubating her eggs in full view of the public.

That is excellent!! Would be nice to see what the hatching success rate would be for mommy incubated eggs. Nice touch ;)
