Getting rid of flies

Getting rid of flies

Postby snake kid » Fri Nov 11, 2011 1:28 pm

So I am now the proud owner of 2 veiled chameleons and is taking care of one for one of my friends. About a week before I got them I got my mom to stop using doom and other chemicals to kill the flies as we live on a farm so we have many and I don't want my chameleons eating something that might me hazardous for them. When I take them out they sometimes catch a fly so that's why I got my mom to stop using the Doom. But now our house is swarming with flies and my parents cant take it any more. So my question is can we somehow get rid of the flies without endangering my chameleons.

use fly traps outside the house? or just flush the toilet more often and a bath now and then might help as well.
(just kidding)

If you have that many flies why don't you get some Venus flytrap carnivorous plants? But from your discription you would have to get a number of plants to make an impact :D

Then there is the old "boere" trusted way to keep flies out. Put wire mesh inside the windows and doors. These you can buy standard to fit windows and doors.

That is our next step yes boa man. Yes we love our animals we have ostrich, fish, parrots, horses, mice and rats, snakes, chameleons, cats (only for now till they find new homes) roaches, meal worms, dogs and rain spiders. We also had a skunk but he left now to become a wild skunk.

Ah that stinks, about the skunk...
And I assume these are all around the house right, well there is your origin of your problem, you must hang the fly catchers where the hatch aka where the animals are but if the animals are around the house you are screwed.

This has been busted on mythbuster, so it might not be factual.

When I was in Mozambique, the lodge I stayed at had lots of plastic bags filled with water hanging around the lapa and the food area to deter the flies. I remember thinking it was a genius idea because there were no flies around those areas at the lodge, and mozambique is full of them with all the fish and whatnot. Apparently the sun's reflection on the water in the bag has some effect on the flies vision, and keeps them away from the area surrounded by the bags. Someone told me it makes the flies think they are looking at fire, so they stay away, but that's only a theory.

The water was in bags similar to the ones pet stores put fish in for the customers to take home.

Try it, couldn't hurt.

Venus Flytrap plants is not such a great idea, as they can't eat and digest flies fast enough to make a difference. Each trap/leaf takes about a week to digest a fly, and the leaf will often die afterwards. So you will need several pots of Venus plants to keep the flies at bay. They can also be finicky to keep healthy.
Another option which grows fairly fast and multiplies quicker, is the Cape Sundew. Nurseries often sell them, just ask. Once again, you will need several pots full of them to make a difference. They are more hardy than the Venus Flytrap.

Thanks for the good ideas guy's will be trying the bag of water thing, and if it doesn't help I'm sure my mom would love more plants she's as crazy about plants as I am about my reptiles.
