My Boy

My Boy

Good Morning All

My weekend got off to a fantastic start with me meeting Rian in Eshowe on the KZN North Coast to pick up my Male Burmese, 2.6 meters but alittle undernourished. It should be noted that this is a rescue which Rian did in Vryheid and the passed the boy on to me. He is a bit thin for his size and I will need to train him to the hook, but that is all achievable, besides, I think with regular handling he will calm down a lot more.

The boy was hungry too, Rian fed him a Jumbo rat last weekend and another one on Tuesday. A 330km roundtrip did not phase my boy, he ate a rabbit on Saturday and is currently occupying the Heat Pad.

Here are some pics.

Awesome stuff, Roland! I'm so glad he's in good hands, and I know he'll have a long and happy life! Enjoy him, he is a sweet heart! ;)

Thanks for the kind remarks guy's. You are quite right, he will be spoilt. It shouldn't cost too much to feed him, two large rabbits a month I reckon should be alright.

That is spoilt! I can't source decent rabbits up here for less than about R65/rabbit, which is too much for my guys, they'd chow two each at a time...

Saturdays rabbit cost me R80, but who's counting. When I took on the hobby, I also took on certain responsibilities, one of those is feeding the snakes I keep in captivity.

A male will not need rabbits. You can get large rats and give him enough of those to keep him happy. There is an over supply of large rats so make space in the freezer and buy them up now.

Thanks Arno. A quick question as this is a learning curve for me as well as others on the Forum.

Why do males not need rabbits'?
Does feeding rats to a male have negative consequences for the snake?

Once again, I am not arguing, I just need to learn.

Male Burmese usually do not get that big. They need enough nutrition to survive but dont need to bulk up like the females do. Rabbits are not cost effective on a male of that size. If the rabbits were closer to R20 each then with longer down times between feeds you could do that too. It does not make much of a difference and when you get cheap rabbits or guinea pigs then feed him that. A snake like that can do well on 4 to 6 rats a week.

Pets Paradise in Pomona sold me rabbits for R15 a juvenile rabbit not long ago.
The adults were going for R25 to R30 each.
I have not bought from them in the last 2 months because I have a breeding setup of my own now,
but am considering getting rid of them piece meal(excuse the pun) and just buying them from Pets Paradise in future.
A lot less hassle and I think more cost effective too.

Thanks Arno

I am lucky to have sourced rabbits a stones throw away from where I live at between R10 and R50, depending on size.

That was not a bright thing to do. Every herper with a big snake is going to buy from them and you will still need to breed your own. You did say Pets Paradise? How many can they produce per week?

I don't really know how many they can produce BV. Maybe about 20 per week?
On hindsight it might have been a bad idea to advertise the fact.
But, I still have about 12 rabbits left in my breeding program,
so I should be able to satisfy my own needs for the immediate future.
And they breed, well, like rabbits :D :D

I only thought to help some people that are battling to feed their animals at an affordable price,
and never really thought of the repurcussions.

Awesome buddy. He is certainly a handsome fellow.
