Egg eater with a big mouth

Egg eater with a big mouth

Postby snake kid » Sun Jan 08, 2012 9:16 pm

Hi fellow herpers.
So Tonight while looking in the fridge for something to munch on I realized its getting close to feeding time for my eggies again and I realized I am out of eggs :smt021 . So I got a bit worried and saw we had some smallish chicken eggs and this got me thinking. I took it to my egg eater cage (I have two D.scabra) to compare it to head size as I have read they can take fairly large meals but while holding the egg next to my females head for comparison she started to show interest in the egg. I was thinking like yeah right you'll never be able to do it but my curiosity got the better of me and I kept the egg still while she inspected it. To my amazement she started to try and swallow it so I slowly left the egg and closed the door and then in a blast of speed and excitement darted for the camera. This is what I have so far will keep updating she has now swallowed it and it is already cracked by the looks of it but I will keep quite now and let you see for your self. Sorry for the bad quality but I am not one for technology.

Sorry the pic's can't be added It say's the board quota has been reached. If you want to see the pics I will shortly add a link to my Face Book account so you can have a look.

Great images man!

Not often get to see scabra taking chicken eggs.
I have two that take them too. Easy animals to feed when they get to that size.

About 65cm. Not huge but still a good size and easy to maintain. I also have another one that is only 50 cm and for him I need quail eggs.

Wow that's amazing! Will you keep on feeding this one small chicken eggs? I've always wanted to keep an egg-eater, but I never had the patience of tube feeding them until they are a good size to take bigger eggs. There is quite a few around here where I stay, but the problem is to find quail eggs. Where do you get quail eggs? do you keep your own quails or do you buy from someone?

I have a supplier here in Oudtshoorn, lots of people keep quails just as pet and when they lay eggs the people just through them away. Ask them to give them to you or you can even buy it from them. You can also buy quail eggs at Woolworths they sometimes stock them. I would not advise you to take them out of the wild it is illegal rather buy one that is on permit. Also babies are not to herd to feed, just buy those small zebra finch, most pet shop's have them. Get two pairs and bob's your uncle you've got tiny eggs. As you can see they can take large meals so (I am guessing here) but I guess you can feed them quail eggs from about 35-40 cm I think but I could be wrong.

Yes i will keep feeding that one, one chicken egg every 2 to 3 weeks. Eggs are high in protein so the egg eaters don't need to much of them a decent sized meal will last a snake 2weeks easily.
