Identify Beans!

Postby greebo » Tue Apr 17, 2012 2:53 pm

Hi all,

This is Beans, a 35+ year old tortoise that a friend of mine wants to give to me since they can't take care of him anymore.

Can anyone identify him/her for me?

Cheers

He should rather donate it to a zoo because he does not have a permit and the next person will be stuck with an illegal animal.
It is easier to ask for forgiveness than permission.

I thought it was a sulcata tortoise! Thanks for the help. BV, we are in the process of getting two leopard tortoises from JHB Zoo with permits. When and if we decided to take Beans we will go through the Zoo to adopt him with permit rather than keeping him illegally. I am sure they will be able to get a permit for him before giving him away since he has been with them for 30+ years.

Greebo you usually dont get two tortoises at a time as they are sticky about more tortoises being bred. You can donate Beans and ask if he can be given to you on permit if that is approved. JHB zoo do not want to keep the tortoises donated and they might be able to keep him aside for you to collect.

The Zoo is willing to sell us two same sex leopards to prevent breeding (we will get two females I think). Should Beans be female we might be able to get it on permit as well after donating it. We will see, as I say, it is not definate that we will take Beans. If we cant keep it then I beleive they will not give it to us but rather make a different plan. They are very attached to Beans, has been there for 30 years!

Its great that Beans has people who care about his future, and also that they realise they can't just pop him back into the bush somewhere. Good luck getting all the permits sorted, and I hope Beans ends up with you!
