Dasypeltis Scabra mislabled??

Dasypeltis Scabra mislabled??

Postby alexelkipling » Tue Jul 24, 2012 4:36 am

Hi everyone,

So my new companion here is Tiradentes, what I originally assumed was a Dasypeltis Scabra/common egg-eater. However, after doing much research, it seems that he is NOT of this species. Instead, it appears that he is either a D. Palmarum or Gansi. Any thoughts?? The store I got him from is run by 'experts' but it seems that maybe they simply got this guy wrong...thanks!

Also, to add, I found these pics on a German website which unfortunately I cannot read nor translate. All I can see is that Tiradentes looks nearly identical in the photo of the man handling a dasypeltis! Thanks!

Where are you from?

I can assure you this snake is not indigenous to south Africa. Not sure what it is, but your right to believe that its not scabra.

Durban Keeper,

Thank you for clarifying some of this. I am from the States and I've had this guy for like 3 weeks now. Any ideas what species he is? I just guessed palmarum from the photos I saw on these websites...guess these reptile breeders didn't invest the time to really examine where he's from..

I would guess it is D. atra as this is possibly the most common of the Dasypeltis in the trade after D. scabra that is.

Bushviper, Aren't they usually a darker color? and if he is a atra, what does it mean in terms of switching up/adjusting his environment? aren't they a montane species? I have this guy on a coconut fiber substrate right now...thanks

Here is another picture that might also help with the identification. Thanks for all your feedback---much appreciated!

I only looked at the speckling now. That does not look like D. atra any more sorry. I am sure most of the Dasypeltis can be kept in the same manner. If he is eating and shedding then dont worry about it.
