Natural display unit.

Postby Eyelash » Wed Sep 26, 2012 10:48 am

I took some pics of my "big" display cage in the snake room and thought I'd share them with you guys...

They are still settling in bit but I'm sure they'll look great in a couple of months !

Thanks jesica...

The top display currently houses Boiga blandingii (Blanding's tree snakes) and the bottom two will house some extremely special snakes once they clear quarantine (unfortunately I'll only show them off at a later stage).

Hey Louis. If you add a nice background it would finish it off nicely...

Great cages! I think most guys dream of naturalistic enclosure, but the maintenance ends up taking up too much time.

I think most snakes will be super happy in those!

What substrate are you using? Maybe think of adding some wood lice to the substrate. They wouldn't harm the snakes and maybe they can aid in keeping the substrate clean.

Thanks guys !

I used a potting soil and plain soil mix witch I've used before with great success. I have added earthworms and will def. add some lice soon, thanks Wes !

@roadkill, I didn't even think of doing a nice background, will get some and post pics once they are in.

Louis.

Sweet setups!
I had kanniedood (sp?) once but it does not like high humidity...
Where do you get the lice from?
You know, you can touch a stick of dynamite, but if you touch a venomous snake it’ll turn around and bite you and kill you so fast it’s not even funny.

Thanks Brad !

Are you referring to Aloe variegata ?

The woodlice are pretty easy to find, if you go around the house and lift some pots you should find plenty. The best spots I've noticed is under rotting wood slabs (will post a pic tomorrow).

Very nice Louis,

I'm sure your new arrivals will be able to settle down easily in this set up. What's the deal with the hide over the water, just trying to create extra humidity? What are these cages made from?

Thanks Warren !

The cages are made of melamine with a concrete back (built in). They are sealed pretty much watertight with silicon and has a 200 micron plastic cover holding the substrate (cover is glued to the wall and sealed with silicone).

The water bowl under the grey tubs are placed on a heating pad to increase humidity and the green and grey tub combo works as a hide where the snakes can choose between two spots to hide during the day. One under the grey tub, that's quite small (like a crack) and obviously in the more spacious tub. I've tried a few different setups for Boiga sp. and this seems to work very well.

I also found a huge stash of woodlice haha...
