Season is in full swing

Season is in full swing

Postby Chameleon Company » Tue Oct 16, 2012 9:24 am

Good day all.

Just want to share a few pics of whats happening in my research site.

Im finding lots of snakes, both diurnal and nocturnal and on some occasions finding pairs together. Red-lips and water snakes seem to be loving the rainfall and the undulating landscape is slowly becoming its seasonal wetland. Rinkhals is a common find and last seasons juveniles are scattered all over. I have found a number of egg-eaters (patterned and patternless) and this is supported by the increasing number of weavers and other birds building nests and laying eggs.

Here are pics of a good example of a communal egg deposition site by P. rhombeatus, under a few rock slabs one can count as many as 7 clutches under the same slab.

Awesome - thanks for sharing.
You know, you can touch a stick of dynamite, but if you touch a venomous snake it’ll turn around and bite you and kill you so fast it’s not even funny.

Thanks for the comments

Was on site yesterday as we had some very nice rains and all is green. Found another 5 heavily gravid Stopped Skaapstekers and another 2 that have already laid eggs and are currently guarding them.... its fascinating to see such a sudden sprout in reptile activity. Will post more pics of females with their batches of eggs I just dont want to disturb them too much.

Other finds include Rinkhals (as always), Brown Water Snake, Red-lips, Brown House Snake, Crossed Whip Snake, Black-headed Snake, Legless Skinks and Rhombic Egg-eaters. Yet it seems the only evidently gravid species are Skaapstekers for now.

Will post pics later of other species.

Amazing patternless Egg eater. I have found two like that but neither survived in captivity.

Yes always a treat to find patternless, I have found a few of them.... roughly 30% paternless to 70% normal phase.

Also a nice example of communal egg deposition site, I have roughly counted 7 batches of eggs under the same concrete slab of which I presume its Skaapstaker and Crossed Whip Snake.

That Herald looks like an absolute beast. Fantastic colours on it as well.
Like Fooble said some habitat shots would be very interesting. Thanks for sharing.
