Could anyone help with info on the Peringuey's adder. Is it legal to keep them in Gauteng?

You do need permits for most SA snake species, unfortunately I can't specify on Peringuey's adder.Another thing, I haven't heard of someone keeping them. These adders have a special drinking routine(in the morning when mist moves in from the ocean), wich mostly consist of water droplets that they gather from mist in the air. Hope this little bit helps.

It is legal to keep them with the permit,

I know of a few people keeping them and they have gotten it right somehow to keep this species of Dwarf Bitis.
I'm sure the experienced Dwarf Bitis keepers will help you out with the keeping conditions.

They are by no means a beginner dwarf Bitis species to keep.

Hope you come right.

They are not a threatened or protected species (TOPS) as far as I know, but Bitis albanica and Bitis shneideri are.

Anyone please correct me on Bitis shneideri?

Anyways, because they are not a TOPS species, a regular permit is required, except in Kwazulu-natal.

Yes you can keep them if you have a permit. Why you would want to try and keep them is beyond me. They do not thrive in captivity and will die. It's that simple.
It is easier to ask for forgiveness than permission.

At the end of the day it is an exotic snake species to South Africa, so surely no permits are required? However proofing origin may become an issue! As BV said, keeping them alive is a whole different issue.

My thinking as well - Namibia is not SA so why the need for permits? I know personaly of only one person who kept and bred them (Hoedspruit), however he struggled to feed the babies  I love them but until i can make a cage that can simulate their natural lifestyle and fins a food source that will not kill then within 12 months then i would definately have a pair or 3 :D

You guys do have a good point.

As far as I know Bitis peringueyi has only been found in the Namib.

Chopper1, they also get their moisture from their food if they cannot obtain it from the fog from the Atlantic Ocean.

Yes sure i understand that (loved my annual snake collecting trips to the west coast  ). I was thinking along the lines of aircondioner type setup to get the humidity and temperatures correct. Even berg adders for example do not seem to do well at the coast or hot places. I used to keep mine in a fridge in Hoedspruit during the very hot times of the year, but this was not ideal for the snakes neither the wife  I have an idea in my mind (whether it will work or not is another story  )...

Ok permits set aside.
What experience have you got with desert bitis sp.? They all have special needs.
Glad you know of a breeder who can help you:)
But end of the day it all comes down to you and what you can do to provide this special species a thriving enviremont.
