ID Please Outside Thabazimbi (Limpopo)

Postby Ryuu » Mon Jan 07, 2013 7:35 am

I was Recently Out on a Camping trip to a fmily Members Farm. We arived there and withing a short distance of the campsite there was a big open grassland. In there I found Hundreds if not thousands of these frogs.. They look like African Bullfrogs (Pyxicephalus adspersus) or at least something along those lines.. I am not to good with My Frogs..

Please have a look and let me know.

That's a juvenile Pyxicephalus adspersus or the Giant bull frog. That's a nice find, and sounds like the species is doing well up there!!

That's really great news!! I know here in Benoni they were endangered until the Bull frog pans were established.

Very good find! I'm glad to see they are still being found by the thousands these days.

About three years ago me and my step father took our grey hound to a veld for some exercise and on the road next to the veld was thousands of these little guys.
It was sad that they were in the road though, I told my step dad to turn around but he probably ran over about 200-+.

I still keep that veld a secret to this day so no one will go and take some for themselves.

As you said there Mr Venom,we as humans are the Bull frogs graetest threat! Its truly said to see juvies and adult DOR's. RYUU just to be sure of the species did you hear their call? If you did was it a deep, slow whoop(Giant bull frog) or a short ,low whob-whob(small bull frog,P.edulis)? Sorry if I go into so much detail but I love identifying frogs by their calls :)

We need to protect them, but at the same time we are their greatest threat.

It really is sad.

On another subject, just wanted to ask.

When is it season for these little (big) guys to come out? I'm thinking of going back to that veld to see if they are still breeding there, and I ofcourse will share pictures.

I really need to get myself that Field guide to frogs of southern africa.

You have a 3 month window to see them. Reason for that is most of the year(+-9 months) they dig in and wait for the rainy season.

It varies from location to location... Here in Gauteng I find them in late November through to February. But like I said there's a variation in locality. Another thing last year they dug in earlier( end of January),maby they sensed the early winter here in Benoni...

I'll go back this month to have a look at the Bull frog pans and hopefully have some pics to post
