I understand fully. But why is everything so secretive?

It is not secretive, it is too early. People only post when they out of hospital/danger.
As a general rule, the more we learn about snakes and their ways, the less fear we have of them. This is usually not so with the Mamba.
The more one learns of his ways, the greater grows the dread of him.
He, without doubt, is the King of Snakes in South Africa.
For quickness, aggressiveness, and the deadly nature of his venom, he has no equal.

I’m sure it’s not secretive, just that there’s a lot more going on that may surpass the need to update everyone, like getting through the hospital stay. I mean come on should we request a detailed report from him on this matter, or just say get well soon?

I am not talking about a response from him. Let him rest, that is all good and well. The handling course was given at a so called "secret undisclosed location" why? Everyone knows what he was bitten by, his condition, etc etc. But no one knows how he got tagged or where? There must have been a group of people that witnessed him getting tagged.

Johan Marais wrote:Have posted updates elsewhere. I am still in hospital and doing fine. Was teasing a Puff Adder with the sole of my boot to show trainees how quickly it can strike (not too bright). It missed the sole and got be in the instep with one fang. The foot and leg is swollen with discolouration at the site of the bite - antivenom was not required and not administered.

Nice one MrG! Jamster, you better make sure you never get tagged yourself or at least never let any of us hear about it if you do.

I think that everyone needs to stop arguing and getting annoyed with each other and just be happy that Johan is ok. This forum should not be arguing amongst each other or criticizing people who are trying to educate others on how to handle snakes. People must support each other, mistakes happen and people need to learn from them and support each other after mistakes or freak accidents. Herping in SA needs to be united to keep the hobby and opinions in general on a positive note. Arguing between each other etc. does nothing positive.

Johan was working at a tracking station (probably Hartebeeshoek) and they dont want their location on the web. That's why that was a "secret".

Yeah he tried to get a puffie to strike the sole of his boot but it missed and penetrated his foot right on the instep. Its not really that swollen and has some necrosis forming but it is still painful.

His phones battery ran down so that's why he was out of contact shortly after the bite. He is fine and nothing to worry about.

I just wonder how he feels about the research that stated you can step on a puff adder and they will not bite you.

Its amazing how all the unnecessary and 'clever'comments come from the kids on the forum

Some people should keep their comments to themselves
