European snake-eyed skink or something else?

European snake-eyed skink or something else?

Postby Maretha » Wed Mar 20, 2013 5:57 pm

Yay, I finally figured out how to post!

I found this little guy in our house last week. I''ve never seen it before so I took a pic with my cellphone (hence the terrible quality). I did a search on Google and I found it under European snake-eyed skink. According to the page a visited this is only supposed to be found in Europe? Does anyone have more info?

Reminds me a lot of of one of the Scelotes species.

I would venture a guess to Montane Dwarf Burrowing Skink, but the long tail puts me off.

It could be, though the tail is not blue....

Perhaps a Wahlberg's snake-eyed skink (Panaspis wahlbergii). They are very common around Amanzintoti and there range does extend to Pretoria.

I have caught that exact species a week ago in Bronkhorstspruit.

It is not Panaspis wahlbergii for sure. I would say Panaspis maculicollis (Extended range after Branch, 1998).

The Cape Dwarf Burrowiung Skink (Scelotes caffer) although the range is nowhere close?

I will post a pic of the ones I found, the tail also puts me off as they are extremely long and have a shade of blue as well.
2:2 Pseudaspis cana
1:2 Dasypeltis scabra

And yes they are all on permit.

Some have blue tails while others don't.

Here's a nice picture you can compare it to, taken from http://vmus.adu.org.za/vm_view_photo.php

That looks like Panaspis wahlbergii to me. They are abundant in the cullinan area, about 50km east of Pretoria and i have have seen them in pretoria north. I could be wrong but i'd say P. wahlbergii for sure.
